October 2007 - Music Recommendations

Here's this month's recommended Music selections brought to you by Playboy.

I Created Disco - Calvin Harris

Review:
"I created disco" is the debut from Scottish dance singer/producer Calvin Harris. The album has already had two big hits in the UK; the nostalgic "Acceptable in the 80s" (#10) and the ode to all types of girls worldwide, "The girls" (#3).

Title track "I created disco" is an instrumental (bar a few spoken words midway) with a fuzzy bassline, and loads of electronic effects. "Certified" is another instrumental with woozy effects. Brilliant!!

Other standouts are "Disco heat", the Giorgio Moroder-like "Electro man" (a relaxed vocal delivery over pulsing hypnotic synths and beats), and the lone ballad, the dreamy plodding instrumental "Love souvenir".

Harris has already been named as a possible producer for Kylie Minogue's new CD, so I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more from him.

LP1 - Plastiscines

Review:
2007 debut release from this new French quartet. The Plastiscines are four girls, reminiscent of The Runaways, with lyrics primarily in French, despite the English song titles. The Plastiscines are part of the new wave of French talent consisting of young middle class kids picking up guitars and letting loose. There has been a large (and positive) reaction to the new movement in the French press and that news is starting to spread worldwide. Catch them before they catch you!. 13 tracks. EMI. 2007.

Four gorgeous girls playing punked-up bursts of 70s rock.

The same poppy attitude and universal appeal as the Donnas & Avril Lavigne'

Proof of Youth - The GO! Team

Review:
If the Go! Team's debut "Thunder Lightning Strike!" was a cheerleading squad on acid, then their second is the same squad taking over a club.

And "Proof of Youth" features this deliciously raucous, wild-sounding Brighton band splashing new sounds over their music. The quieter songs don't quite fit their sound as well, but fortunately most of the album is rollicking colourful rock'n'roll and quirky rap-pop, still fresh and fun.

"The blast from the past, superb in every word/Soupest female rapper, yes the best you heard... To you!/So what you wanna do?" It's a bit self-absorbed, but who cares? The first song -- and lead single -- is a frenetically-drummed, funky dance tune with their trademarked acid-funk-cheerleading-rock style. It'll make you dance, whether you like it or not.

Lady's Bridge - Richard Hawley

Review:
2007 album from the critically acclaimed British singer/songwriter, his fifth solo set overall. Before he began his solo career, Hawley was a member of Longpigs and Pulp, amongst others. The album, an elegiac ode to Hawley's native Sheffield, England, follows up 2005's stately Mercury Prize nominee Coles Corner. 11 tracks including the single 'Tonight The Streets Are Ours'. Mute. 2007
